I really enjoyed the Jo Boaler lecture. The sample lecture they give at the 26 minute mark, in the video, is great. I think that's how teaching should be done. Some of my math classes were like that. I missed them throughout my university degree as all my lectures were just sitting and watching and taking notes. Kind of like watching a youtube video but in person. I think participating in the classroom and engaging in the problem on the board, makes you look forward to the class, and it makes going to school fun. I found most students, and even adults, get bored in a pure lecture environment, that is, where the teacher just lectures on and on without any interaction.
Our first discussion as a group was about being a reflective teacher. I believe, being reflective as a person is even more important. Thinking about how I acted towards someone, and how I should've handled this or that social interaction better, takes a considerable amount of time out of my day. Whether we do it while driving or doing something monotonous, I think it's imperative we reflect on how we treat people, since one of the quotes that stuck with me from today was "you teach who you are".
Lovely! Thanks for these important thoughts, Marius.

ReplyDeleteHi Susan, I just saw this. I think I'm going to look into getting email notifications. The Entrance Slip was posted. It might have been a late one, I do remember posting one late but I can't remember for which course.
